Progress…

Sent off three chapters today, so that’s exciting 🙂 I admit, this one is going slowly, probably because it’s a transition book. I’ve never written a transition story before, so I haven’t *quite* gotten down the nuances and the flow of it. Plus, I want to make sure that it’s the best that I can write, and not just put out sub-standard fair, which the last manuscript WAS.

I just wanted to drop a line, give ya’ll updates, let you know that I’m still plugging away at Magick! Oh, there is so much more I know I wanted to say, but I totally forgot what it was. Something wise and motivational, but for the life of me, I can’t recall it. Oh, the vagaries of getting older!

Whew!

Bad news- Magick won’t be released on December 17th unless my editor can work miracles. After a month of strep-throat, bronchitis, Thanksgiving, and an upper-respiratory infection that wouldn’t go away (the whole frickin house was sick…), I managed to squeek through the last 10K words on Magick, but it is going to take heavy revisions. I followed that old addage of “it doesn’t matter what you write, just write”. Eh, that’s a double-edged sword. I don’t really like where the story went, but as we all know, characters and flow have a way of taking on a life of their own. I will have to see what my editor says.

Good news- Magick is finished- at least until the red pen comes back. I’m hoping it will only be delayed a month (fingers crossed!). In the meantime, I’m starting to read it today so I can try to anticipate what my editor comes back with and be pro-active! As much as anyone can be pro-active through a Nyquil hangover. Anyway, I digress. I have a month of light work ahead of me, so that’s plenty of time to get Magick polished and off for publishing. Then it’s on to Solstice, Harley and Damien’s story, and that’s going to be a doosie! Stayed tuned for updates! And maybe some little tidbits 🙂

It all began…(spoilers)

So, I had my vampire, but I needed his mate. What kind of woman would attract a vampire? Quirky ingenue? Brunette bombshell? Nah, not my girl. I wanted a brainy, independent loner who was absorbed by her career. A woman who had no need for male companionship.  A woman consumed by finding an answer.

Gareth was already working on XP in my mind, so I thought to myself that this was the best way to bring them together. Through research. But why was Anna searching so hard for a cure for XP? Because her mother had XP and died from it. And then other tragic things happened. I don’t want to give it all away…

Anna is young, she’s self-sufficient, but she is essentially a hermit. She has no friends, by her own choice, she doesn’t have long-lasting relationships, and she never opens herself up to experiences. She loves the lab, loves the research, and loves the act of discovery, although she has no desire for the spotlight.

She’s pretty much isolated herself, so the thing that breaks her out of that shell had to be pretty amazing. Especially since she wasn’t looking to move out of her comfort zone. To me, only love and instant attraction can burst that bubble!

I hope you enjoy Gareth and Anna’s story, because they are wonderful people to get to know! More on the rest of the trilogy later…

Do you believe in Magick?

Here’s an excerpt from Magick! I hope you enjoy, and feedback is welcome!

“What are you doing?”

I heard Harley’s muffled laughter behind me, and I spun around, cooking fork in hand. She threw up her hands in mock surrender.

“Okay, I give up, sorry I was a bitch earlier. Seriously, what are you doing?” She came over to where I was staring vacantly at a pot roast sitting on the counter in its tidy plastic wrap, with no clue as to what to do with it. The counter was a mess, with chopped vegetables spread everywhere, cans of beef broth opened with gaping lids, and a wealth of flour dusting everything lightly, as if to mimic a winter wonderland.

“Noah is going to be staying the night indefinitely, until this whole Padraigan thing is done. I figured it would be nice if I cooked a nice meal to thank him.”

“I could think of something else you could do for him, and it doesn’t involve you trying to cook. I think he would appreciate that more.”

I brandished the fork at her menacingly, but she just laughed.

“I’ll do this. Step back, and watch the master work.”

Conceding defeat without even a whimper, I went to sit in the breakfast nook and watched her for a while, not even bothering to pay attention to what she was doing. I could make a dark day bright, but I could not cook worth a damn.

“I will say this, though. It’ll be a little weird seeing Noah in the house in the mornings, not that I’m not grateful that he’ll be here. Our spells are one thing, but it’s nice to have a sorcerer in the house.”

I looked at her, nonplussed. What did she just say?

“I know, I know, but Noah is different. He’s not like any other sorcerer that I know. He’s honorable, thoughtful, and not too cocky. A little bit of arrogance is attractive, I always say.”

I was struck speechless. My mouth opened and shut as my brain tried to process what she said. Granted, Harley had always been the more accepting of us, her mind more open to sorcery, but it was still a shock to hear her say something like that.

Noticing my lack of response, she turned toward me. “What? Did I actually shut you up for once?”

“I’m just not used to you saying something like that. What brought it on?” I finally found my voice, but was still just as puzzled as before.

She turned back to the counter and lifted the pot roast into the frying pan. I watched as she seared the meat, at least I thought that’s what she was doing, and waited for her to go on.

“Well, we’re all in this now, tied in somehow. Gareth and Anna because of the cure, Noah because of his loyalty to Gareth, although I think there’s something more there, and me because of you. I would love for us to get to the bottom of your night time trip to his house, and maybe having Noah here will give us the extra strategizing brain power needed to figure that out.”

It was glaringly conspicuous to me that she left Damien out of her little equation.

“What about Damien? I noticed you didn’t include him, although by my estimations, he’s part of this, too.”

She shrugged nonchalantly, but I could see that she wasn’t unaffected by my question. I didn’t have to be tuned into her feelings to know that.

“He has his own issues that have nothing to do with us.”

“Oh by the Goddess, Harley, quit it. Just stop. I don’t know what is going on with the two of you, because you won’t let me in on it, but he is as much a part of this as we are! He saved Anna’s life, and if Padraigan wasn’t already holding something over his head, that would have brought him into the mess just as much as we are. Give the poor man some credit. He can’t help who he is any more than we can.”

“You think I’m like this because he’s a werewolf? Teagan, you should know me better than that. If I were that type of person, I wouldn’t like Gareth, either.” She muttered, almost throwing the roast into the slow cooker. She started tossing vegetables in, almost making as much of a mess as I would have. Carrots and celery bounced out of the pot to land back on the counter.

“But you do like him, Damien, I mean. You can’t fool me, Harley.”

“OH! Just drop it, okay? We’re talking about you and Noah.”

“No, we were talking about how you thought it would be nice having a sorcerer in the house.” I let her change the subject, as she was obviously getting agitated over it.

“Well it will be nice. Ooh, maybe I can get him to fix the toilet on the ground floor.”

I snorted out a laugh.

“I get it now, you just want a handyman around. I can dig it.”

Zoinks!

I have been away too long! Things got a little crazy there for a bit, with animals going to the vet and bringing a new puppy home, and trying to get some work done on Choices AND Magick…I just didn’t have the time! Can I not just skip sleep? If I could skip sleep and drink copious amounts of coffee, I’d be ok!

So I’m introducing a new character into the Immortals and Magick Trilogy, and he will be introduced in the third book. His name is Jaryth….well, I can’t give you his last name because I don’t believe in spoilers! Let’s just say he’s another vampire in Padraigan’s arsenal, but has close ties to one of the gang.

emo vamp

Jaryth is just your typical teenage vampire who is a couple of centuries old- he’s a little emo, a little tortured, and favors skinny jeans. But Jaryth has a secret, and things are not as they seem…

Stay tuned for more updates on Magick, Choices, Blood Moon, and many more!

Magick Cover eBook Cover

Movin’ on up!

I sold a print book!! YAY! And someone donated to my fund! YAY! It’s been a great day! Friday is ALWAYS a good day, but I have a great weekend planned ahead of me, and now I have something to celebrate! I have to puppy-sit this weekend (two puppies, actually) and I’ll use that time to work on Magick and another book that I’m going to submit to Harlequin. Let me tell you, because I have to actually promote Eternity myself, and on the cheap right now (meaning free), it’s taking up ALL MY WRITING TIME!!

Not that I don’t love the promotional aspects of doing this, but I want time to work on my actually writing. Not complaining, don’t get me wrong, but I gave myself a deadline and I want to meet it.  That being said, I’m so very excited!! This is a total dream come true, and I hope and prayer that I am given the opportunity to devote myself full-time to writing. I have to try to think about my literary heroes and their humble beginnings: Stephen King, who wrote Carrie after he came home at night from his job in a dry-cleaners, and Nora Roberts, a stay-at-home mother.

You know my biggest issue is? I’m so flippin’ impatient. I’m not writing for the wrong reasons: fame and fortune are not part of it. Fortune would be nice, and I won’t turn my nose up to it, but the only thing that money would give me is the ability to write MORE. I hate putting my writing on the back burner to a 50-hr a week job…le sigh. Again, NOT complaining! I’m happy with my life and where its going right now 🙂
